Introduction: Food is fundamental to the daily lives of all Canadians, providing sustenance, fostering community, and driving economic growth. Informed by extensive public consultations and engagement with Indigenous communities, the Government of Canada crafted the Food Policy for Canada. Released in response to the diverse perspectives shared during consultations, the policy aims to address pressing issues within the nation's food system.

Foundations of the Policy: The Food Policy for Canada is built on six interconnected outcomes: vibrant communities, increased connections within food systems, improved food-related health outcomes, strong Indigenous food systems, sustainable food practices, and inclusive economic growth. These outcomes serve as guiding principles for action and decision-making.

Policy Implementation: To support the policy's implementation, the Canadian Food Policy Advisory Council will provide diverse perspectives and expertise. A cross-government reporting framework will ensure transparency and accountability in tracking progress towards the policy's long-term outcomes. Four key action areas have been identified to address immediate challenges: enhancing access to healthy food, promoting Canadian food domestically and internationally, supporting food security in northern and Indigenous communities, and reducing food waste.

Policy Principles: The policy principles emphasize inclusion, reconciliation, collaboration, innovation, and sustainability. Recognizing the importance of cultural diversity, gender equality, and community engagement, the policy seeks to empower Indigenous communities and promote a holistic approach to food systems.

Targets and Alignment: Specific and measurable targets aligned with the UN Sustainable  Development Goals will be developed in collaboration with the Canadian Food Policy Advisory Council. By aligning with existing government commitments and international goals, the Food Policy for Canada aims to drive meaningful progress towards a healthier, more sustainable food system for all Canadians.
