Now is the time to accelerate the shift to a more circular Europe
March 21, 2024 | European Environmental Agency |
The European Environment Agency (EEA) underscores the need for further decisive action to transition Europe's economy from linear to circular, emphasizing reduction of waste, resource use, and improved recycling rates in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Despite recent progress, the EU's circular economy policies require greater binding and targeted approaches. However, achieving these goals faces challenges such as slow progress and increasing reliance on global imports for critical resources. To accelerate the circular economy, policies must focus on eco-design principles, extending product lifespans through reuse and repair, and reducing unsustainable consumption levels. Additionally, research on consumer behavior and just transition principles should inform future actions. The report stresses the necessity of a robust global governance framework to address unsustainable resource use at a global scale.
