The rapid expansion of global aquaculture has provided significant benefits in terms of food security and economic development. However, it has also led to environmental degradation and social challenges, highlighting the need for sustainable practices. Nature-based Solutions (NbS) leverage natural processes to address various environmental, social, and economic issues. The IUCN Global Standard for NbS offers a framework to implement these solutions effectively. Applying NbS in aquaculture can align the industry with sustainable development goals, addressing key issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and food security.
Policy Recommendations
- Adopt the IUCN Global Standard for NbS: Implement the 8 Criteria and 28 Indicators to ensure robust, context-responsive, and adaptive solutions. Utilize the self-verification toolkit for accessible and effective NbS design and assessment.
- Promote Ecosystem-Based Approaches: Embed aquaculture within broader ecosystem management frameworks to balance production with conservation. Ensure biodiversity net gain by evaluating and enhancing ecosystem services provided by aquaculture.
- Enhance Multi-Stakeholder Engagement: Foster transparent and inclusive decision-making processes to balance short-term and long-term needs. Promote community-based and well-being-oriented aquaculture practices to achieve social equity and economic viability.
- Integrate NbS into National Policies: Mainstream NbS within national development and environmental policies to ensure long-term sustainability. Align NbS initiatives with global commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Facilitate Continuous Learning and Adaptation: Establish adaptive management frameworks to allow for ongoing learning and improvement. Support the development of a global community of NbS practitioners to share best practices and evolve the standard.
